My sister told me not to make this blog post public. In her opinion, posts like these are a waste of time and especially, they’re none of peoples’ business. After much thought, I decided to go ahead and post because 2016 was a crazy year for me, and for the first time in my life, I have a burning desire to review how I spent the last 365 days of my life.
I’m sharing this with you because of all the support I get from my brides and readers and because I hope it helps you along your own journey to see that you are not alone in whatever it is that you are trying to achieve.
So without further ado, here is how Cassie’s year went in 2016:
Let’s start with the “failures”
My 52 week portrait project lasted 4 weeks. I got incredibly bored and quit. It was a great excercise, and quite frankly, would have probably helped me be more creative and become a better photographer but the truth is, I was too lazy to get dressed up, do my makeup and set up studio lights every week. My laziness got in the way of a very cool project. I’m considering doing another project but I’m not sure for the moment, because I need to check my committment level. Here are the portraits that I did come up with:
Alors on Mange is a Youtube show that I started with Amoni. It was fun, but also incredibly time-intensive and my photography business took off at about the same time time that I decided to do the show. It also got quite costly because I was buying so many ingredients, testing recipes like crazy, and paying to get my show edited. It got pricey and I decided to invest in my photography business instead. I would love to continue/or start over but again, I’m not sure if I will in 2017. If I do, I may only focus on baking and I’ll try to get over my perfectionism and just try and edit myself.
I let my personal life get in the way of my business for too much of the year. I should’ve recovered faster and moved the fuck on. The days spent feelng blue messed with my money and looking back were just a waste of time. I estimate I wasted about one month of the year feeling sad. Gary Vaynerchuck says it best “Spend 0% of your energy on the things that don’t matter.”
I got a one star review on Facebook. I work on a first come first booked basis and I don’t reserve dates until I receive a deposit. Even though I state it explicitly on my website, I don’t know if I stated it to a potential bride and I booked someone on her date. The situation sucked.
On to the “successes”
I finally, participated in a wedding show! After contemplating it for a year, I decided to take a leap of faith and it was the number one factor in Cassandre Poblah Photography growing so fast. It’s also a big reason I’m ending 2016 with 21 clients signed for 2017!!!
I made friends as an adult! I think this is probably the thing I’m most happy about because it’s so hard to make friends when you get older. I met so many wonderful people this year. But my favorite were my 2 clients that became my friends. Best. Job. Ever!! Here they are (Elena and Liliane, not the guys, could you imagine, lol): I worked on my branding, it’s still a work in progress but I think that my company is getting closer and closer to my vision for it, and I now have a pretty logo because of it (it’s my initials in the shape of &, symbolizing you & bae, it’s all very deep, lol). I’m still not 100% satisfied with the branding, but it’s a work in progress and it’s coming along nicely.
I found a sport that I love- Snowboarding!!! Who would’ve guessed, not me, lol:) I’m excited about this because I work about 70 hours a week and do not exercise as much as I should. Plus this gives me an excuse to be a snowbunny and I get to hit the spa afterwards.
I wrote a comprehensive guide entitled “How to choose the perfect photographer for your wedding day”! It was a huge undertaking and I’m so proud of the results. I had it just in time for the wedding show and my brides found it extremely useful. I also put together a smaller pricing guide.
I conducted a survey to help me with my branding and I’ll be posting the results shortly.
I made a business Facebook page that’s going really well, and I’m more engaged on Instagram, people actually follow me and like my stuff, it’s all very weird, but I’m appreciative of the love.
I upgraded my camera and lens and bought a company car. My business is officially official!
I made it on Au Vieux Moulin’s preferred vendors list. This is a huge honor because the owners are industry pros, and I absolutely adore the place. I think it means I’m doing something right:).
I met an awesome guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s the reason why I tried snowboarding in the first place:).
What I learned
Keep trying. The more I failures I have, the more I’m putting myself out there. I only have one life and I definitely don’t want to play it “safe”. I want to go after my dreams and I hope this inspires you to do the same. I’m going to be posting my goals for the new year soon, so come back and check it out. It’ll be nice to have some accountability:).
For many of you reading, 2017 will be a crazy love-filled adventure. I’m wishing that each of you have a year filled with prosperity, good-health, and above all, love. Thanks so much for contributing to one of the best years of my life. xx, Cass
